DISABLED ACCESS

Access Statement For Victoria House

Introduction
Victoria House provides bed and breakfast accommodation in the centre of Church Stretton, Shropshire.  The property is a Victorian town house and while access is restricted for some visitors we do our utmost to provide help if at all possible.

Pre-arrival
  • The website is clearly presented, in large print with an unfussy colour scheme.
  • Contact can be made by telephone, e-mail or through the contact form on the website.
  • Details of public transport and taxi services can be provided on request.
  • We are situated in the centre of Church Stretton within 20 yards of the Easthope Road car parks and the Co-operative supermarket.  Public houses and restaurants are in close proximity.
  • Disabled toilets are situated within the aforementioned car park.

Arrival and Car Parking Facilities
  • Easthope Road car park passes have been purchased from the Shropshire Council and are solely available for the use of our guests however guests can park in front of the house to unload. We will gladly assist if required.
  • High Street and the pavement in front of Victoria House is tarmac.
  • The entrance to Victoria House is under cover and paved brick. When night falls, a sensor light automatically comes on when it detects movement in the passage.
  • Our telephone number is clearly marked on the front gate.

Main Entrance and Reception
  • There are two steps at each of the entrances to the property. Steps to the front of the property are four inches and five inches in depth and to the side, six inches and seven inches in depth. The side entrance steps have a grab rail to assist.  Unfortunately it is not possible to have ramps over these steps.
  • The main entrance hall and reception area are tiled with Victorian tiles.
  • Lighting in the hallway and reception area is electric but the area is fairly dim due to the layout of the building.
  • Once inside, the floor is level. The reception area is not manned 24 x 7, however we provide guests with a contact number should they have any problems.

Internal Public Areas
  • The guests’ lounge area is on the same level as the reception area and has polished wooden floor boards.
  • The only way to the guest bedrooms is up the staircase however assistance can be given if required.
  • The property is protected by a wireless fire alarm system. We also have a manually-operated fire bell situated on the second floor. Signs are clearly marked indicating evacuation down the stair case and onto High Street via the side passageway.

Restaurant / Dining Room
  • The breakfast room has plenty of natural light and overhead lighting with seating for 15 guests.  All tables and chairs are antique and not uniform in size.
  • Guests serve themselves to the cold buffet and we bring the hot breakfasts to the table.  Assistance can be given wherever required.
  • We cater for dietary requirements wherever possible.

Bedrooms
  • As we do not have any ground-level bedrooms, Victoria House is not suitable for wheelchair users.  However many guests who use walking sticks have easily managed the first flight of stairs to the guest bedrooms.
  • Guests are made aware of the fire alarm wireless system throughout the whole property.
  • This is a Victorian property with many of the original features.  Four bedrooms have carpet and two have polished floorboards and rugs.
  • Lighting is via ceiling lights and reading lamps to each bedside.
